According to the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM), chronic disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the US. Global rates of chronic disease have never been higher, with the cost of chronic conditions eating up 90% of all healthcare dollars spent. Walk Towards Health (WTH) is a community health education program based in Ashland, Virginia, dedicated to preventing, managing, and reversing chronic diseases through Lifestyle Medicine based on the six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine specialty, our future healthcare system: (1) sleeping 7-9 hours each night, (2) being physically active, (3) having positive social connections, (4) managing stress, (5) eating whole-food, plant-predominant meals, and (6) avoiding risky substances.
